Quantum Physics, Relativity, and Complex Spacetime: Towards a New Synthesis
نویسنده
چکیده
In the beginning there was Aristotle And objects at rest tended to remain at rest And objects in motion tended to come to rest And soon everything was at rest And God saw that it was boring. Then God created Newton And objects at rest tended to remain at rest But objects in motion tended to remain in motion And energy was conserved and momentum was conserved and matter was conserved And God saw that it was conservative. Then God created Einstein And everything was relative And fast things became short And straight things became curved And the universe was filled with inertial frames And God saw that it was relatively general but some of it was especially relative.

Quantum spacetime: what do we know?
I discuss nature and origin of the problem of quantum gravity. I examine the knowledge that may guide us in addressing this problem, and the reliability of such knowledge. In particular, I discuss the subtle modification of the notions of space and time engendered by general relativity, and how these might merge into quantum theory. I also present some reflections on methodological questions, a...

At Planck-scale, spacetime is " foamy " due to quantum fluctuations predicted by quantum gravity. Here we consider the possibility of using spacetime foam-induced phase incoherence of light from distant galaxies and gamma-ray bursters to probe Planck-scale physics. In particular, we examine the cumulative effects of spacetime fluctuations over a huge distance. Our analysis shows that they are f...
متن کاملEmergence of Time and Observable Physics
A new idea, which is deeply rooted in noncommutative geometry, is proposed in this paper to connect general relativity, quantum theory thermodynamics, cosmology and the foundation of quantum mechanics. The emergence of time and the arrow of time become natural in the new scheme. 1. the issue of time An important question is asked explicitly in some literatures such as [2], which concerns with t...

1124 NOTICES OF THE AMS VOLUME 45, NUMBER 9 I n the twentieth century, the quest for deeper understanding of the laws of nature has largely revolved around the development of two great theories: namely, general relativity and quantum mechanics. General relativity is, of course, Einstein’s theory according to which gravitation results from the curvature of space and time; the mathematical framew...
متن کاملQuantum Geometry and Its Applications
In general relativity the gravitational field is encoded in the Riemannian geometry of space-time. Much of the conceptual compactness and mathematical elegance of the theory can be traced back to this central idea. The encoding is also directly responsible for the most dramatic ramifications of the theory: the big-bang, black holes and gravitational waves. However, it also leads one to the conc...
